Discover Zuidoostbeemster

These days the Beemster is mainly known thanks to the Beemster cheese. The Beemster polder and municipality are situated in the province of Noord-Holland. The Middenbeemster and the Noordbeemster and the hamlets of Halfweg and Klaterbuurt all fall within the Beemster. Following the reclamation of the polder in 1612 the polder was placed on the UNESCO world heritage list in 1999. Around the year 800 the area that now forms the municipality of Beemster was covered in peat. It is named after a small river in the area. This small river developed into an inland sea between 1150 and 1250 with an open connection to the Zuiderzee. It was only in 1610 that a high enclosing dike was built which ensured that the polder was dried out on the 19th of May. The current Droogmakerij Beemster (Beemster polder) became a reality. The typical Dutch ‘Stolp’ farmhouses create a striking picture in the Beemster. The arrangement of the landscape is also very special. You can for example explore this during a walking or cycling trip through the Beemster. Undertaking a cycling tour to nearby towns such as Alkmaar and Purmerend is also possible. Don’t have your own bike with you? You can easily hire one in the Beemster. Various artists have established themselves in the Beemster and offer courses. During your stay in the Beemster you can learn how to use water colour, draw or paint etc. This gives your holiday in the Beemster a creative touch and you will return home with beautiful artwork made by you. Would you like to go out for the day with the children? In Heerhugowaard you can find the Ballorig amusement playground, ideal for the little ones. Additionally, there are various playgrounds in Purmerend and Alkmaar. In the Beemster you can visit various farms, such as the organic farm of Sonnevanck. After your visit here, you can buy fresh eggs, beef and lamb from their own land. You can also get vegetables and bread in the farm shop. If you are in need of a wonderful holiday with, according to your wishes, many activities or just peace and quiet, then the Beemster has plenty to offer.
