Skasterlân
Skarsterlân isn’t just beautiful as a result of its abundance of water, forests, villages and vast open landscapes. Literally everything about it is beautiful! There is always something happening. It’s bustling with events in the summer, from water spectacles to hot air balloons.

The municipality of Skasterlân, situated between the Tjeukemeer and the Langweerderwielen, includes approximately 30 villages, including Joure, Sint Nicolaasga and Langweer.

Joure, Skarsterlân’s principal place, is not a town, but also became too big to be called a ‘village’ many centuries ago. Joure is therefore always referred to as a “vlecke”, in accordance with old Friesian traditions: a place somewhere between a village and a town. Joure is well known as one of the most beautiful places in the South of Friesland as a result of its many monuments and other places of interest. The Jouster Merke is also quite well known, a market which attracts thousands of people every fourth Thursday in September.

The village of Sint Nicolaasga, referred to by the Friesians as Sint Nyk, can be found just to the South West of Joure, beautifully located between the Tjeukemeer and the Langweerder Wielen. You will find a freely accessible beach with swimming possibilities at the Tjeukemeer, just a few kilometres outside the village.

Langweer is an attractive and picturesque village located at one of the most beautiful Friesian lakes. Its central location means Langweer is an excellent starting point for some fantastic sailing trips. You can easily map out a suitable sailing route with any wind direction. Sneek, Heeg, Lemmer, Sloten and other well known water sports places can be very easily reached from here by boat.

But this isn’t just an excellent place for water sports lovers. There are also plenty of opportunities for some amazing cycling and walking trips. A relaxing way of becoming acquainted with the Friesian culture, for example the Fierljeppen on the Fierljepschans in Joure or the Skûtsjesilen on the Friesian Lakes. Isn’t the weather cooperating? Then a tour by car along the Friesian Eleven Cities is also a nice option.
